If there's one thing I've learned while living in Scotland than it's probably not taking good weather for granted. And for that reason, if the weather forecast shows 15 degrees Celsius and sun for a Friday, you better get off your bum and spend the day outside on a Friday!
So that’s exactly what we did. One of the prettiest and most popular beaches in Edinburgh is the one in Portobello, so that’s where we were planning to spend our afternoon. We sat in the sand, listening to 80s and 90s songs from the small bluetooth speaker Daniel brought along, sang along, danced along… and were just happy. It’s actually strange how much the sun instantly lifted our moods. But I guess after spending almost 4 months in Scotland and hence suffering from a major lack of vitamin D it’s more than clear that we’ve all been desperately craving to feel those sun rays on our skin again.
I already mentioned it briefly in my Instagram story but that day I got home and felt absolutely content. I thought back and mentally listed all the small things that have made my day so great. Among these things was for example the free Nutella Crepe that I got after dropping the first one in the sand after not even one minute… It was truly a facepalm-worthy moment that I’m sure I will be reminded of maaany many times again from now on, haha! But besides the good weather and great music it was of course also the people that made the afternoon a whole lot better.
I looked around our pretty diverse group: my new friends from all over the world who I’ve really only just met but who, at the same time, have already become close friends and valuable companions on this exciting journey of mine. I realized in that very moment that just their company alone already made me happy and that – if we’re being very realistic – we’ll probably never again get together in this exact constellation as soon as the semester is over. Soon our time here will run out and when the day has come, each one of us will return to their old lives and pick up from where they have left. That’s why I embrace days like these. These are memories in the making and I’m making sure they’re the best ones possible. Because I feel like in the end that’s what it’s all about: creating something worth smiling about for when the moment has been long gone already. And when I do, I’ll be thinking: Take me back to that afternoon. Take me back to Portobello beach.
