Every year it seems to be the same. Mother's day is approaching at the speed of light and you keep thinking you should get something really cool and special this year and then suddenly it's here and you end up buying flowers and chocolates, just like last year, telling yourself that next year you need to try harder - just like last year.
I get it, really. After all, I’ve been in this situation often enough. Especially as a student it’s tough to find something that doesn’t break your bank while knowing that your mother would actually deserve the world. But whether you’re lacking the budget or the ideas, I’m here to save your day! (Well… hopefully. I don’t wanna lean outta the window too far at this point!)
In this blogpost I’m going to present you some ideas that I came up with while brainstorming for my own gift and that I thought would be a little game changer for once. You might find them cool, you might find them silly – and that’s absolutely okay. But you might even find the perfect gift for your mom, and that’d be the best case scenario for me.
1. Recreate old childhood pictures
I’m sure you’ve seen this “trend” pop up at least once on your facebook timeline and if not, you definitely have to check it out. The title is pretty much self explanatory so I won’t waste much time in telling you how to do it, but you should definitely check out this Buzzfeed post for some inspiration and, of course, a good laugh. It’s a fun and personal gift I’m sure every Mom would appreciate!
2. Step up your flower game to subscription
Buying a nice flower bouquet is always a good idea and most women will always be happy about that. But what if you gave them 12? You heard right! There are actually websites that offer flower subscriptions where they automatically send you a new arrangement every month so you have something beautiful and blooming in your house all year around. I admit it’s a little pricy (around 200€ for a yearly subscription) but it’s the perfect gift to split between siblings or other family members!
Check out these following websites:
- Austria/Germany/Switzerland: Bloomydays
- USA/Canada: Bouqs
- UK/Ireland: Bloom&Wild
3. Or opt for the eternal flower option
Did you know about the specially treated rose boxes that last for years? They’re an awesome decoration in every home and great gift idea for loved ones. They come in various colors and sizes (some are even scented!) so there’s something for every budget. Plus: both flower options are perfect if you live abroad and won’t be able to see your mom for mother’s day!
- Austria/Germany/Switzerland: Jardin De Fleurs
- USA/Canada: Eternal Fleur
- Europe: The Million Roses
4. Relive an old memory together
I’m sure everyone of us is full of countless beautiful childhood memories that didn’t mean much at the time but are even more valuable now that we’ve grown up. Think back to a day that made you especially happy or a trip that was so chaotic or fun that your family’s still talking about it at every gathering. Take some time to brainstorm and then pick one memory you’d like to relive with your mom. For example: go eat ice cream at the place you went every sunday in summer or plan a weekend trip to the beach you spent all your childhood vacations at. Maybe even spend a night at the same Hotel!
The possibilities are endless and hence the budget option vary a lot. Whatever you pick though will be a great way to thank your Mom for all these wonderful memories and to spend a day being nostalgic, filled with “do you remember when…”
5. Have a fancy or fun night out
When was the last time your Mom had a fancy night out or when was the last time you had one together? Give your mother the chance to doll up and invite her to an exclusive restaurant, cool bar or exciting live concert. Keep them drinks coming, share funny stories and confess some of the less crazier things you did as a teenager (no need to ruin the evening right away, haha). Let your mother feel young again and do something new and special you’ll both remember for a long time!
Fun fact: this is what I went for in the end. I got my Mom tickets for “Jovanotti”, an Italian singer we both really like. She already knows about it (so I’m actually not spoiling this for her rn) and we’re both looking forward to it already!
6. Other really cool subscription boxes
Another ongoing trend these days seems to be subscription boxes. What started out with the Glossybox for beauty products now also expanded to other areas, just like the flower version mentioned above. Check out these cool services:
Cooking:
I’ve tried this myself (with Hellofresh) and absolutely loved it! Pick your favorite recipes every week and have the ingredients and recipes delivered right to your doorstep, weekly! It’s a great way to try new recipes and to bond over cooking and eating a meal together!
If weekly is too much for you, simply try the service by Quarterly which gets delivered – you guessed it – quarterly! In contrast to Hellofresh, however, it doesn’t contain fresh food, but still surprises you with a great variety of recipes, spices and exciting ingredients.
Reading:
If your Mom’s a bookworm then I guarantee this will be the perfect gift for her! Depending on which website you pick, she’ll get different books with snacks and other goodies every month, the perfect occasion to have some time to herself and relax. Heck, I wanna get this myself haha!
Try these: The Cozy Reader Club, The Book Drop, The Owlcrate, Quarterly.
Fashion & Lifestyle:
This is another box by Nina Garcia offered by Quarterly that gets delivered every 3 months containing accessories, gadgets and even beauty products that are currently in style. For the Mom who knows what’s up and loves trying new things!
Wine:
I only found out about this while doing research for this blogpost and am asking myself: where has this been all my life? Let your Mom take a short quiz and she’ll then get sent different wines (by the glass) every month. If she likes them she has the option to buy the full size bottle directly from the same website. Found here.
7. Let her trace her mother’s mother’s mother’s mother (and even further!)
I’m obviously talking about a DNA-based ancestry test! I gave this to my boyfriend for his last birthday and it was a total success! You send in your saliva (the shipping is included in the initial purchase price) and after 6 weeks you get a super detailed report that traces your ancestors back hundreds of years and tells you where you’re actually from. The website gives you details about your possible relatives and lets you connect with people who share common ancestors with you. It’s a great way to find out more about your family and how their actions affected your life as it is now!
I’m recommending 23andme as I have made personal (positive) experience with it, however there’s many other services who offer similar or same services!
8. Book a photo shoot
I know this sounds very cheesy, but honestly, which mom would not love to have a proper, professionally taken picture of her and her loved ones? Whether it’s in a studio or in the open, maybe even in your own home, give your mom something she can proudly hang on the wall and admire daily.
So grab your siblings, other family members or simply go just the two of you! It’ll be a fun experience and a memory that’ll literally last a lifetime.
9. Have a mother-daughter spa day!
I did this with my own mother once and we both really enjoyed it. Check the Spa’s or Hotels in your area and see if they offer a mother-daughter package. They usually include a pre-fixed set of the same types of treatment, but specially tailored to each of you. Meaning: your Mom will get an Anti-Aging facial, while you get one for younger skin, etc.
If such a thing is not offered where you live, you can either put it together yourself or simply spend the day at the Spa together without any fancy treatments; to go offline, have a swim and relax.
10. Write a bunch of “open when” letters
Many use this idea for their partner but it’s actually also the perfect gift for a Mom, especially if you’re on a low budget. This is probably also the most personal it can get and can definitely be a long term gift, depending on the titles you pick. Here are some ideas!
Open when…
… we just had a big fight.
… you haven’t heard from me in a while.
… I’m getting married.
… you miss me.
… you wanna have a good laugh.
I really hope this post was able to help you find something for your mom or maybe you were able to come up with something yourself while reading through it! I’d love to hear what you decided on, though! Leave me a comment below to make my day. 🙂

Heeeey sweetie!
Thank you for all the good ideas, I’ll think I’ll go for a spa day with my mum! But I also like the idea of open letters, I might keep this idea for later 😉
Thank youuuuu and keep having nice posts like that ♡
